WHO Faces Significant Workforce Reduction Following United States Funding Withdrawal
This global health organization has announced intentions to cut its workforce by nearly a fourth – totaling more than two thousand positions – by the middle of 2026.
Financial Shortfall Prompts Major Restructuring
The decision comes after the United States, previously the organization's largest contributor, pulled out funding previously this period.
Washington was responsible for about 18% of the organization's total funding, causing a significant financial gap.
Projected Staff Reductions
Based on organizational estimates, the staff is expected to drop from 9,401 positions in January 2025 to around 7,030 by June 2026.
This decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one posts includes staff reductions, retirements, and natural departures.
"This year has been one of the most difficult in our history, while we have navigated a painful but essential process of prioritisation and realignment," stated the organization's director-general.
Financial Shortfall Persists
This Geneva-based organization now confronts a budget shortfall of $1.06bn for the upcoming period, amounting to almost a fourth of its required funding.
The amount marks an improvement from a prior projected gap of $1.7bn noted in spring.
Excluded Funding
These budget calculations exclude a further $1.1bn in potential contributions from current discussions with multiple donors.
The representative for the agency stated that the present unsecured portion of the budget is actually smaller than in previous years, crediting this to several factors:
- A smaller total budget size
- The launch of a fresh fundraising effort
- An increase in member states' required contributions
The realignment process is currently nearing its end, allowing the agency to progress with a reshaped structure.
