Tuchel Expresses Disappointment Over Home Crowd Support Despite Dominant Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel shared his disappointment that the England team did not enjoy greater encouragement from the home crowd during their commanding friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was pleased to see his side maintain their good form, with finishes from Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the match. But, he was displeased with the energy at the iconic venue.
“With one and a half training days to prepare against a well-trained team and we did very well,” the coach stated. “It could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the additional goals. The stadium was silent. There was no any energy from the crowd. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you give in 20 minutes? We prevented them get away. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s sad because the team deserved better encouragement today.”
“I maintain my words. There’s nothing more than being three goals up in a derby. I would have wished for a bit more backing in phases where it is challenging.”
“In the second half, to support us, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to refocus, but it is what it is and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Performance
Apart from potentially starting a fight with supporters, the manager also raised eyebrows by leaving out Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. But the choice was validated by Rogers impressing again in the attacking midfield role and getting his first international goal.
“That’s his style,” the head coach said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his spot.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Improvement from Defeat
The Wales manager hopes that Wales, who face a strong Belgian side in a crucial qualifying match on Monday, learn from their awful first-half display.
“That’s the reason I wanted this match,” the manager stated. “I need to see our current level. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? Today gives me drive.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was taken off at half-time after hitting a goalpost and will be a doubt when the national team play their next opponents in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
