Cyclone Melissa is projected to escalate to a uncommon highest-level hurricane as it veers toward Jamaica, delivering dangerous rapid inundation and landslides.

The cyclone, which had wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is currently turning northwest in the Caribbean and is anticipated to hit the coast by Tuesday, based on data from meteorological authorities.

Warnings of blackouts and structural damage have been announced as this storm produces up to 76cm of precipitation and sea level surges as high as 4m above ground. "Seek shelter now," residents have been told.

The cyclone is the 13th named cyclone in the ongoing Atlantic season, which typically ends in the eleventh month.

Category Five Cyclone Risk

A Category 5 storm is the strongest type, with sustained winds of at least 157mph.

Although the hurricane is expected to diminish in strength to a Category 4 hurricane before reaching the island, meteorologists said there was "almost no noticeable change in the total effects" upon making contact with land, and that the cyclone will be "just as powerful" when it strikes the country.

Urgent Safety Steps

With tropical storm-strength winds and rain already expected ahead of it crosses Jamaica's central region - including potentially the city of Kingston - alerts state that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"A multi-day period of harmful winds and intense precipitation has started and will cause severe and deadly rapid water accumulation and numerous mudslides," urged climate experts.

The country's head of government the official commented: "I understand that there are numerous residents who are worried, who are very concerned, and appropriately: you should be concerned.

"Yet the best way to manage nervousness and any unease and worry is to stay ready."

Residents are being told to fortify their houses with protective bags and plywood sheets, and to accumulate basic necessities.

Broader Consequences

Warnings are also in effect for regions of the neighboring country such as the main city, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and Cuba's eastern region, where Melissa is anticipated to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Mudslides presently generated by the cyclone have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Future Course

The hurricane is forecast to pass over the island nation by Wednesday before moving through the Antillas Mayores and out into the Atlantic Ocean.

By the time it makes contact with the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have reduced to a third-level storm.
